This project uses free GIS data and off-the-shelf embossing technology to allow blind people to download and emboss customized tactile street maps of any location in the US.
The Artificial Vision Device consists of the following three parts: a camera that receives the picture, a visual information processor that transforms the picture into electrical signals and a skin-attached transmitter. For the receiver, we used a simple black-and-white camera with a high-focus glass lens at a 90 degree angle. A personal IBM-compatible computer with special software was used for processing the visual information.
