The history books will certainly make mention of the biggest natural disaster to hit the gulf coast in the history of the United States. Hurricane Katrina, (and the resulting flooding of New Orleans, Louisiana), and Hurricane Rita combined, displaced more people than any one event since the dust bowl era of the 1930's. People from all walks of life were forced to take refuge in schools, hospitals, sports arenas, nursing homes, and the homes of relatives and strangers... in communities far from their own.
We, here in New Orleans and the surrounding communities are now planning the future of the region. It must be restored, revitalized, and prepaired for the homecoming of hundreds of thousands of its former citizens. Unified Nonprofits-Greater New Orleans is one group that is deeply committed to the rebuilding effort. I am currently an active member of this group and several other disability and senior oriented community planning committees. Working as a team we shall oversee and shape the procces of reconstruction.
Bringing people home is our goal. Restoring much needed services including: hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and especially community support systems is vital to this mission. In the coming months I will provide important information about the availability of those resources that directly impact the needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities. Linking you to this information is my goal.
If you are one of this community, or providing care or support to a displaced person with special needs, please feel free to email me with specific questions or suggestions for the ribirth of a great community. mstrue1@hotmail.com
On this page you will find a listing of currently available programs and services in the Greater New Orleans area for both seniors and persons with disabilities. This page will be frequently updated as I learn of new openings, anouncements, and related information. If you wish to read more about my personal activities in New Orleans, click on this link to read my article, "The Land That Time Forgot".

VOTERS! Important Information on Changes in Local Polling Places
The Louisiana Elections Division has placed an on-line polling place finder for displaced or returning evacuees throughout Louisiana. To find your new polling place please click here: http://sos.louisiana.gov/polllocator
LOUISIANA SENIORS HAVE UNTIL DEC. 31 TO APPLY FOR PART D WITHOUT PENALTY
CMS will provide all Hurricane Katrina evacuees a special enrollment period (SEP) that gives them more time to change their Medicare prescription drug plans in 2006. The special enrollment period means that Katrina evacuees will be able to join and switch plans, including Medicare prescription drug plans, at any time through Dec. 31, 2006. This special enrollment period allows Katrina evacuees to change regardless of a change in residence, such as if they have temporarily located, have moved back to their permanent home, or if there are other circumstances that require more time to choose or change plans.
To determine if individual is eligible for this SEP, Medicare plans must first attempt to obtain proof that the individual resided in an affected zip code (e.g., driver's license, utility bills, etc.). If the individual is unable to provide such proof, the plan must accept the beneficiary's attestation that he or she resided in an affected zip code. For a list of zip codes meeting these qualifications contact the Dallas Region 6 Medicare office.
