Hello, My name is Michael True. It has been a joy and priveledge to watch my dream, the Independent Life Resources website, grow to become a world class stop on the information highway. I would like you to know that his website was, from the beginning, created and continues to be updated by no one but myself.
My goal was and is in my slogan: "A World of Resources for Persons With Disabilities, Senior Citizens, and Those Who Care!"
For 30 years I have strived to get good, reliable information to use in my work assisting persons with disabilities and senior citizens. (click here to read my background information), In the past, Resources were more difficult to come by for myself and thousands seeking similar information. Following a severe injury to my right arm in September of 2000, I found myself disabled, and was unable to continue my work in the direct-care field. In the beginning, I was devastated.
Through a workman's compensation grant I was able to get a computer and train myself to write the HTML code that programmers use to produce webpages. It was a painstakingly slow process but I had a mission to keep me going! I decided that I could still be of value working from my home, as an information specialist. I would provide the world with a well organized and easy to use directory of resources. Hundreds, then thousands, of people began using the 'World of Resources' pages. Meanwhile, I have struggled to keep the dream alive. In 2005, I was further impared by a cripling condition known as osteoarthritis, and then, a critical heart condition. In June of 2005 I underwent open-heart surgery for a mitral valve replacement. The operation, done at a Veterans Administration Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, was an amazing experience. The arthritis, as many of you know, will not be as easy to dissmiss.
The World of Resources project, officially launched in May of 2001, is much more than just another Internet search engine. In order to improve access to information, I believe a human touch is required. For over five years I have personally been selecting, describing, and categorizing each link in my directory. I have also written over 20 informational articles, and feature relevant news sources.
If you view my guest list you'll get good impression of the many individuals who are eagerly using this valuable resource. I have welcomed over 500,000 visitors to the pages of Independent Life Resources, thus far.
There are an estimated 600 million individuals with significant disabilities in the world today. This does not include the hundreds of millions of elderly persons, or those who suffer from long-term, chronic illnesses and injuries. How do we provide housing, medical and theraputic care, education, and vocational assistance to so many? Where will we look for hope?
Today I am asking for your pledge. If you have found this website useful in any way, please consider donating any amount to support my continuing efforts. My only wish is to be able to go forward with this project, to let more people know about its availability, and to be able to expand the selection of resources I am offering. You must know that there is no shortage of need!
If you haven't already done so, please, take the time to explore the "Independent Life Resources" website and see for yourself what a jewel it has become!
Make a difference... Give the gift of knowledge and empowerment! For more information, please contact me. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
